FAQ

Common questions about BetrBudget. Missing something? Email ashot@parler.com.

Is BetrBudget really free, or is the free tier a trap?

Free is genuinely free. You get manual transaction entry, CSV import, envelope budgeting, sweeps, multi-user, and exports — forever. The only Pro-gated feature is automatic bank sync via Plaid, because Plaid charges us per connected bank.

Why is bank sync paid?

Plaid charges us about a dollar per connected bank login per month. Charging $5/month per household covers that and the hosting cost. Free tier stays free because manual entry costs us nothing.

What happens to my data if I downgrade from Pro to Free?

Your existing transactions stay. New bank syncs stop. You can still see, edit, and delete everything that's already there. Re-upgrade any time.

How is BetrBudget different from EveryDollar / YNAB / Mint?

Pending transaction visibility. Most apps wait days for charges to clear before showing them. We show them the moment your bank authorizes them, so your budget reflects what you actually spent — today, not Thursday.

Can I cancel any time?

Yes. Cancel from the billing page; your Pro access continues until the end of your current billing period.

Do you support multiple banks?

Yes. Pro tier supports as many bank connections as you want. There's no per-account limit.

What about teen accounts?

Add a teen with the Teen role: they can see the family budget and add their own transactions, but can't change category structure or delete other people's entries.

Where's my data hosted?

On servers we control — currently a US-based Linux box. You can also self-host the entire app on your own server; the code runs on Node + PostgreSQL.
